For many people it can be difficult to quit abusing alcohol. When you have a routine that involves drinking on a daily basis, it can be physically uncomfortable to attempt to break that routine on your own.

Many people have a hard time identifying their own alochol addiction and often they have an even harder time admitting that they need help. Alcoholism is difficult to accept in particular, because it is socially acceptable to drink. What most people fail to understand is that recovery from alcoholism does usually require an alcohol treatment program.  What many people don’t know about alcohol treatment is that, often patients require a medically supervised alcohol detox. When you use alcohol on a regular basis your body becomes physically dependent on it and when you stop using it your body can react negatively. Alcohol detox programs are done in an inpatient medically supervised setting to ensure the safety and comfort of the patient. The length and complexity of an alcoholics detox program varies depending on the individuals unique situation. Many people are done detox in as little as three days, while others can be in detox for up to two weeks. Medications may be given during alcohol detox to treat symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
Successful detox from alcohol must always be followed by a treatment program to ensure long term success in recovery. Many different programs are available for alcohol abuse, both in an inpatient and out patient setting. Typically, it is advised that patients who required detox enter a inpatient program following successful detox.
