One of the things that you can do in a drug and alcohol treatment program is to discover a sense of purpose for your life. This may take time, because in the beginning two weeks or so of a rehabilitation program you will be mostly focused on the process of detox.

After this time, though, it becomes easier and further parts of recovery become more possible. Not having a purpose in your life is one of the things that contributes to addiction for many people. If you had a strong sense your goals and where you were going, it would have been less likely that drugs and alcohol would have been able to take over. Developing these things, then, can help to prevent a relapse to substance abuse in the future. The concept of having a purpose in life is thrown around a lot, but it can sound like a vague idea. What it really means is having an overall theme for the things that you do. It is the thing that motivates you to get up in the morning, even on days when you’d rather stay in bed. This can be your current career or work aspirations for the future, your family or being a good parent to your children, religion and spirituality, or adhering to your values.

The important thing is that you are passionate about your purpose in life, or it won’t work. When the elements come together, this will allow you to be productive, happy, and fulfilled after an addiction treatment program. A sense of meaning will motivate you to learn new things, achieve your goals, and even keep from returning to drug and alcohol abuse. You will realize that addiction would take you away from the real reasons why you get up in the morning and take away from the person you can be.
